“Once you had no identity as a people; now you are God’s people. Once you received no mercy; now you have received God’s mercy.” (1 Peter 2:10 NLT)
Let’s not get overzealous with the message to our youth that they can be anyone they want to be. The police call that identity theft, and it is a Class 1 felony. Today more than ever, and (no) thanks to the accessibility of the Internet, it is easy to get tripped up in misunderstanding our identity. If we are not discerning, we can allow things other than God to define our identity. The message from the world on this topic is quite different than the Biblical message. Some say our identity is in our status or profession. Others may say our identity is in our popularity, political affiliations, or perhaps an identity in our religious denomination. Our identity can be misshaped based on the influences of our family, the education system, or teachers of false gospels. Misinformation is rampant. The mission of my ministry, Astounding Truths of the Bible was birthed from a desire to enlighten people with Biblical Truth.
It is astounding when we examine the Biblical understanding of identity. Scripture is explicitly clear on communicating my identity – my identity is a royal daughter of God. Once I began thinking accurately about myself in those terms, it changed my outlook on who I am. Joshua felt the same way during his season of leading God’s people after the death of Moses. God equips us with words of wisdom for how to have success wherever you go (Joshua 1:6-8). God did not suggest that Joshua be strong and courageous; he commanded it. Through these verses, God tells us to meditate on Scripture and carefully observe everything written in it. Much like our identity, the path for success looks different for Christians. Success for followers of Christ is fulfilling the God given purposes He has ordained for our lives.
As a daughter (or son) of God, this is now your heritage. Paul reminded the Galatians this profound truth: “For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. (Galatians 3:26-28) Nothing that divides us as far as worldly classifications (ethnicity, economic status, career path, political affiliation, etc.) speaks to our identity – only the Lord Jesus can speak to our identity.
Lord, if I ever find myself in an identity crisis, let me rely on You for clarity. Equip me to be aware that You define my identity, and not the world. Remind me on a daily basis to see myself as You see me. Amen.
