Your Identity Is Worth Finding

For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul? (Matthew 16:26 KJV)

I love to travel. As I write this post, I am currently in Australia and heading to New Zealand to visit relatives tomorrow. While traveling is fun, it can also be stressful. At one point during my trip, I misplaced my passport (the only form of identity required to get me safely to my destination). Can someone say “panic!” I searched my purse like someone searching for hidden treasure but to no avail. Finally, I thought to myself “check your backpack”. Aha! There it was. I could now breathe. My required form of identity had been found.

I am sure you have your own story of misplacing important items. But what do you do when you feel lost in life and the thing you’re searching for is YOU? I believe the rich young ruler in Mark 10:16-22 describes a person in this situation. While this scripture is mainly a teaching, by Jesus, on riches, I also believe it paints a picture of someone who has placed his identity in “doing”. (Mark 10:17 “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?) Can you relate? I sure can.

At some point in our lives, we will all be faced with a decision to let go of something of lesser importance to receive something of greater value. In my own life, God asked me to give up my business so that I could enter a time of healing with Him. I never knew how much I had placed my identity in my work until I had to give it up. There were times when I felt purposeless and insignificant because, at times, the enemy would try to convince me that I had no worth apart from a job. I had misplaced my own identity and didn’t realize it. Just like the young ruler, God was inviting me to find true purpose in Him, apart from doing and He wanted me to understand that I didn’t need to constantly do in order to have significance. Jesus tells us that following him and being in relationship with Him is the key to unlocking intimacy with Him on earth and treasures in Heaven. (Mark 10:21)

My heart goes out to this young ruler because I believe he was lost and longing for identity. Why else would he run to Jesus and kneel before Him unless he was missing something that he desperately wanted to find? However, as great as his passion was, the thing he idolized most deceived him into believing he needed it more than Jesus.

Friend, God doesn’t want you choosing lesser things that will never truly satisfy. He wants to give you an identity that can never be lost. Matthew 16:26 states: For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?

Are you willing to forsake all, follow Him, and discover your real identity? I guarantee you, it’s worth it.
